Boosting resilience in an age where energy security is redefined by geopolitics

Location:Martinikerk - Het SchipTrack:Plenary session

Boosting resilience in an age where energy security is redefined by geopolitics

Tensions between the US and China are on the rise, whereas war is still ongoing on the European continent and the Middle East is in turmoil. This affects energy relations and the very definition of energy security with the EU hedging its dependencies and striving for more strategic autonomy. It aims to reduce imported fossil fuels from petrostates like Russia by accelerating the transition to renewable energy, electrification and energy efficiency measures. However, this transition comes with challenges and new vulnerabilities, such as dependency on Critical Raw Materials and the need to protect critical infrastructure for electricity to cyber and hybrid attacks. This comes on top of a new dependency on US LNG and the energy technology dependency on China. The contribution by dr. Louise van Schaik will point to this evolving geopolitical context and how the energy-rich North Sea region can play in addressing the challenges by boosting the EU’s energy security in a resilient way.
